Butter Shale: Preserve the Evidence
Why the layer, articulation and association matter alongside the prepared fossil.
Record the layer, not just the formation
The Mt. Orab study distinguishes clay-rich layers with more articulated remains from silt-rich layers with more locally transported debris. A precise layer record carries information that an Arnheim Formation label alone does not.
Carcass, molt or fragment
The documented trilobite assemblage includes carcasses, molts, enrolled and prone individuals, and disarticulated remains. Preserve and photograph associations before interpreting them. Articulation or enrolment alone should not be turned into a confident account of how a fossil died.
Describe the actual preparation
Record tools, preparation time, stabilisation, repairs and any removed matrix for each actual specimen. The research reference is not a universal preparation recipe and does not demonstrate what work was done to an individual sale lot.
